APA
HOLDS 10TH SPORTS MEET
The 10th
ASEAN Ports Association (APA) Sports Meet, held in Bangkok, Thailand on August
2-5, 2010 saw a total of 365 port officials, players and supporters from seven
member countries basking in an atmosphere of sportsmanlike yet friendly
competition at the playing venues especially provided by the host country, Thailand,
during the entire five-day Meet.
Indonesia, with a
total contingent of 100 participants, topped the scale in the number of
delegates fielded for the APA games. Malaysia came next with 96, then Thailand
with 82, followed by Brunei Darussalam with 55. The remaining member countries
in attendance, namely: Singapore, Vietnam and Cambodia have less than 20 delegates
each. Completely missed by the gathering were the delegations from the Philippines
and Myanmar, who were not able to make it to sporting day. In lieu of their absence,
warm wishes were heartily conveyed by the two member states to the host and all
the delegates for a successful and memory-filled sports event.
The Sports Meet was
officially declared open by Thailand’s Minister of Transport in a ceremony held
at the stadium of the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT). Six games were
officially selected to be played by members of the different contingents, namely: golf; football; mini-marathon; badminton;
sepak takraw; and ten-pin bowling. Specific venues were assigned for each of
the scheduled games. The games format, rules and regulations as well as the
scoring system, adopted during the Technical Committee Meeting for the 10th
APA Sports Meet held on 26-27 October 2009 in Bangkok, were strictly observed
and followed all throughout the duration of the games.
On the end day of
the Sports Meet, Thailand emerged as the Overall Champion - garnering 12 gold,
seven silver and five bronze medals. Indonesia placed second with five gold,
seven silver and seven bronze awards. The third place was cupped by Malaysia
with two gold, seven silver and five bronze prizes. The overall results of the sports
